My contribution to Expo is the egg, for its shape, its content and what it represents symbolically”

Chef Cracco presents the symbol of his cuisine, transforming this culinary staple into an extraordinary work of art. A primary structure on which to work wonders.

The ingredient that Carlo Cracco has chosen to add to the fabulous menu of the World Fair, the one that he feels represents him best, is, in fact, the egg, the most protein-rich and perfect of foods, the most basic yet also the most complete which, alone, is worth an entire design piece, the most architectural of all foods.

Given Cracco’s renowned expertise in the presentation and aesthetics of food, this is anything but mere chance. In 2009, his sumptuous dishes stole scenes in the film ‘I Am Love’, even being mentioned in the film credits. Even though he dislikes the idea of making a distinction between form and substance and refuses purely aesthetic labels.

In light of the fact that Carlo Cracco is a world-renowned chef, it comes as no surprise that one of the best summaries of his viewpoint on the subject is expressed in an interview with Wall Street Journalist Piero Negri in 2011.

“Quite a few designers come to my restaurant: Aldo Cibic, who is a friend, Piero Lissoni, Antonio Citterio, Philippe Starck – a vegan, just like Thom Yorke – very often Fabio Novembre, another good friend, sometimes Marc Newson… Generally they are surprised when they see my dishes, they feel a closeness to their imaginations and the way their brains work.

I am not a designer, I am just a cook.

When you imagine a dish, you picture it complete in your head – you feel the consistency of the raw materials, you see the colors, you taste it in your mind, you lay all the elements down on the plate according to a vision that is just yours. And this is exactly what turns a good chef into a great chef. So sometimes you might find yourself involved in the writing of a screenplay, sometimes you draw lines just like a designer, but you are not making movies and you are not a designer cook. You are just a cook, in the best possible sense.”

Therefore neither a designer, nor an artist but ‘simply’ a cook: but a cook who designers and artists relate to because, through food, he mysteriously expresses, harmony and proportion, architecture and lines capable of stimulating thought while gratifying the palate.

An Italian architect and designer and an Ambassador of Expo 2015, of late he has concentrated on the task of nurturing Milan with shapes and structures but, above all, ideas.

AN EVOLVING CITY
The sixty-four-year-old architect has signed several of the most significant projects of the new Milan: the multi-functional space located in the ultra-trendy Porta Nuova district (below), Expo’s Padiglione Zero, the Expo Center and the new mounting of Michelangelo’s Pietà Rondanini. Additionally, he is set to unveil his installation “The Walk” at the Milan Furniture Fair.

Known for his iconic beard and calm manner, Michele De Lucchi immediately gives the impression of a man inspired. He does not have the ineffable air of an intellectual but rather comes across as a dreamer to whom destiny has given the gift of a sense of practicality and design, to transform dreams into objects, shapes and structures. An Italian designer and architect, he has masterminded architectural projects throughout the world, including residential and industrial buildings as well as business and cultural centres. He has curated the staging of exhibitions for museums such as the Triennale di Milano, the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, the Neues Museum in Berlin and the Gallerie d’Italia Piazza Scala in Milan. He has signed several pieces that have gone down in the history of design. He has received lots, in fact, practically all, the most important prizes and awards related to his category. Lastly, owing to the fact that the ability to seize the place and the moment is a quality essential to his work, over the past few years he has mostly been working, in Milan, in preparation of this 2015 during which the city is getting ready to step into the limelight and showcase its attractions to the world. It therefore comes as no surprise that De Lucchi has been invited to be a part of the team of Expo 2015 Ambassadors. His imagination and his language as an architect, designer and visionary consist, inevitably, of visual references: in fact, he defines Expo as “a beautiful film, whose lead actors are the 145 countries that have come together in an attempt to offer inspiration and express their ideas and opinions about what is most important today for humanity.” He says that at Expo he would like to have “an opportunity to present and demonstrate, on a one-of-a-kind stage, what we are doing, what we are thinking, what we are planning and what we are dreaming about for our existence.”

His direct involvement in Expo is impressive: he designed Padiglione Zero, the one that provides an introduction to the entire site, the Expo Center (featuring an auditorium, an open plaza and a meeting area) and the Intesa Sanpaolo Pavilion. In a wider sense, he contributed to beautifying the city with the by now world-renowned Unicredit Pavilion, in piazza Gae Aulenti, and the museographic mounting of Michelangelo’s Pietà Rondanini at Castello Sforzesco’s Spanish Hospital. While waiting for the World Fair to open its doors, for the 2015 edition of Milan’s Furniture Fair, De Lucchi has conceived and designed ‘The Walk’ (‘La Passeggiata’) for Workplace 3.0, an installation dedicated to the workplace, based on the idea that “new activities and working modes generate new workspaces and new design requisites for inhabiting them.” His reference to the ‘hunger’ for new requisites is a theme dear to De Lucchi. It is not mere chance that he considers “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” a magnificent title, even though, inevitably, when he talks about nourishment De Lucchi’s first thought is not about food: his way of nurturing the environment is to foster ideas, architecture and objects. It’s about stimulating the ‘proteins of the mind’, with the aim of (re)structuring a world increasingly geared towards beauty and sustainability, namely one that embraces efficiency and harmony, utility and respect.

March 2015, Milan Luxury – first issue

Expo Milano 2015 – not only a huge enogastronomic extravaganza but a ‘one-of-a-kind’ opportunity to explore themes related to nutrition, agriculture, biodiversity and the nutritional disparities that still divide the world.

Milan is proud to have been chosen to host this amazing event, focusing on food and examining the countless issues in light of new global possibilities.

At the same time, those visiting Milan before, during or after Expo will have a unique chance to tap into the city itself, a creative, highly stimulating metropolis which though imbued with history is also the place of the now and the next, offering a slew of truly heady, exclusive experiences. Milan, an industrial powerhouse and an arbiter of taste in fashion and design, is renowned for amazing its guests with its wealth of treasures.

Expo 2015 has asked its Ambassadors, key players on the Milanese scene, to each bring their own special ‘ingredient’ to the rich menu of the event.

Famed international chef Carlo Cracco has emblematically chosen the egg: a basic yet high symbolic foodstuff, associated since, time immemorial, with fertility, rebirth and the cycle of life. With its perfect shape, it is one of nature’s most inimitable design objects. In fact, it is not mere chance that together with meat, fish and pulses, the egg is a rich source of proteins, the building blocks of our body.

Our journey starts here as we take you in discovery of Milan, world capital of fashion, design and architecture. The face of the city is rapidly changing becoming a showcase for stunning, futuristic architectural projects, here introduced by Michele De Lucchi, another Ambassador of Expo. A hidden Milan, just waiting to reveal its ‘Great Beauty’.
