When Roberta Romoli, one of the co-founders of this jewellery brand, invited me to view the collection of ROSSOprezioso jewels at the flagship boutique in Milan’s Via Fiori Chiari, I had no idea that I was about to try on some of the most lightweight pieces I’ve ever worn – so light that it was easy to forget that I was wearing anything at all.

A myriad of vibrant colours lay spread out in front of us, and like a kid in a candy store, I took selfies while dripping with embellishments crafted from crystal, acetate, wood and enamel. The best part, being ornately bejewelled for hours didn’t stretch my earlobes

‘Liz’ earrings – emerald and diamante
Cascading pieces for captivating movement and brilliant bursts of colour.

‘Red Carpet’ bracelet – blue stone
A chunkier piece whose busy appearance is deceptive of its light weight.

‘Liz’ necklace – ruby and diamante
Glamorous jewels that mimic the sparkle of precious stones.

‘Cocktail Dress’ bracelets – purple night and grey star
Sweet and pretty enamelled pieces for delicate wrists.

‘Red Carpet’ necklaces – red sunset and moonlight

‘Total Black’ earrings
Geometric shapes lacquered in pitch black enamel with crystal drops – the ideal contrast against blonde locks!

I fell so head-over-heels in love with ROSSOprezioso jewels that I just had to take some samples back home to South Africa where Solomons Fashion & Décor stores now stock the brand.

If you’re thinking of adding some of these ultra-lightweight jewels – which are also ultra convenient for travelling – to your collection, visit the ROSSOprezioso website to shop online or visit the boutique in the Brera design district, via Fiori Chiari 16.

It’s that time of the year when you have to lock up dainty sandals, and to prevent your toes from turning into ice blocks, update your boots collection for all-day comfort during the chilly months. That said, the gradual transition shouldn’t cramp your style because we’ve selected the best open-toe ankle booties, knee-high and thigh-high boots to help you race around town, run between business meetings and even pitch up at dinner dates looking fabulous in the latest flats and heels.

Via Montenapoleone

Burberry

The soft outer leather of open-toe booties act as canvas for Burberry’s hand-painted motifs inspired by the Bloomsbury Group’s British writers and artists in Charleston. Titled ‘Prorsum’, each lace-up item walks cheerful floral paint-brush strokes and ethnic African patterns into the fall, while luxurious black velvet, rich patent and textured leather steer clear of multi-colours. On wet days, step into blue, green or black rain boots marked by their famous check.

Classic brogue detail adds English charm to this shiny ankle boot. Crafted from 100% buffalo leather, it boasts a stacked 10cm heel, 1.5 cm platform, laces and zipper closure.

Bottega Veneta

The signature Bottega Veneta ‘intrecciato’ is woven by hand into several sophisticated models of flat and heeled boots. For a timeless look, consider the ‘Biker’ in tan leather which features elegant, masculine details. These boots reach mid-way up the leg with a rough effect and a glossy sheen on the toe and heel, while a chunky stacked wooden heel promises all-day comfort and durability.

The ‘Edward’ knee-high boot in calfskin and canvas, is a stark contrast yet complementary union of creamy vanilla and chocolate with hand-engraved buckles.

Sergio Rossi

From the Sergio Rossi range of exquisite footwear comes black boots in every conceivable shape – some inspired by the Wild Wild West. Strong, decisive gals will appreciate the dark, sultry appeal of the ‘Texas’ with its 12cm straight heel, leather stirrups and metal studs, or the ‘Biker Rockstar’ edition with hooks on the laces, a bottom lug and round toe. Need something formal? Try on the curvaceous ‘Blink’ with metal inserts or the bi-colour ‘Lady Jane’.

A new interpretation of the ‘Lady Jane’ design, this striking goat suede bootie in fantasy bi-colour has a 10.5cm stiletto heel, leather sole and almond toe.

Gucci

There are boots galore at Gucci with everything from rubber rain boots marked with inter-locking G logos and leopard-print knee-highs to suede open-toe booties. Elongate your shapely pins with 4-inch heel ankle boots studded with gold metal, or stay warm with the ‘Courteney’ high boot which has furry shearling trim at the top to balance the 11.5cm wedge and 3cm platform.

The unusual ‘Olimpia’ bootie is a showstopper with its multi-faceted cone heel. Nude suede is trimmed with black while elastic inserts reveal flashes of skin.

Giuseppe Zanotti

There’s nothing understated about the Giusepppe Zanotti range of booties. This former radio jock exercises natural flair when sketching each piece, and the result is unfaltering eccentricity. Catch the light as you step into an embellished kaleidoscopic design; let flame cut-outs circle your ankles, or look pretty in pink suede boots with turnovers. Silver is the must-have hue of the season, so don’t shy away from the metallic nappa model with pleated detail.

Let your feet steal the limelight with this crystal embellished bootie in black suede. It has laminate-effect rainbow fabric inserts, an inner zip closure and 11,5cm heel.

Via Sant Andrea

Jimmy Choo

It’s easy to migrate between seasons in style with Jimmy Choo’s range of sexy booties. The ‘Mendez’ in tourmaline suede – best worn with short dresses and opaque stockings – creates an illusion of longer legs thanks to the flattering low frontal cut. A similar model – the ‘Rooney’ – is dyed electric blue or spotted in animalier while hints of flesh are exposed with the sexy ‘Luther’ and ‘Livid’. If you’re stretched like a runway model, relish in the thigh-high ‘Turner’ boot. It’s a streamlined, simple yet racy addition with its solid black exterior and 9cm heel.

The ‘Luther’ cut-out bootie evokes a sensual seductive feel with English floral print. The fully covered body meets a patent leather ankle and 11cm heel.

Via Santa Spirito

Gianvito Rossi

Possessed by an inner cowgirl? Gianvito Rossi lets you flaunt charisma with well-heeled boots inspired by the heroines of old Western legends. Click the heels of the ‘Bonnie’ peep-toe; a sassy lace-up design with curvy black contrasting trim against nude leather, or earn admiring glances with ‘Annie’. Western flair creeps into this model available as an angular cut bootie or thigh-high boot.

The ‘Annie’ thigh-high boot, inspired by classic cowboy style, is distinguished with elegant piping which leads the eye all the way up.

Christian Louboutin

Simply smitten with Christian Louboutin? This French designer sure treats footwear design as an art form. The theatrical ‘Viennana’ for example, is inspired by cabaret with its chic narrow straps across the foot. Made from smooth black kidskin, it promises to liven up your wardrobe with a touch of drama coupled with a 10cm heel. Do you already own the ‘Kate’ pump? Wear her cozy sister; the ‘So Kate’ bootie in python or black suede which features the same sexy pointed toe and thin stiletto.

Mesmerizing and boisterous, ‘Filette’ is an accent piece which combines patent leather, lace, glitter and a 10cm heel to achieve fantasy and 1920’s glamour.

The revolving red door of the Boscolo Milano had welcomed me on a previous occasion – a Fashion Week footwear event in the hotel’s Museum Hall – ‘a meeting place’ as Sales Manager, Carol Galuzzi describes it, where relationships thrive amidst an ever-changing, intimate environment.

She was right. I returned to find the chilled-out space occupied by small chattering groups sipping afternoon aperitivi while designer shoes were replaced with dramatic carved figures, but this time, I was invited to journey through all nine levels of 5-star Boscolo bliss.

From the reflective spheres suspended in mid-air and eclectic webs of interconnected metal bars to an almost galactic background of dark marble sparkling with constellations of sparkling lights, the décor at Boscolo Milano is nothing short of spectacular. The 1920’s building previously housed a large bank but was bought over by Angelo Boscolo, the founder of the Boscolo Group, whose visionary mind decided that this prime location on the edge of Milan’s exclusive fashion square would be the ideal site for the first large ‘permanent installation’ of Expo 2015– a perfectly calculated acquisition in preparation for the 20 000 visitors who will descend on the city.

Angelo assigned Italo Rota, an Italian architect to transform the shell into a sophisticated futuristic space, and in 2009, the concrete ‘shuttle’ was inaugurated. Italo exceeded expectations successfully transporting guests to a parallel universe – central enough for hard-core fashionistas who fly to Milan with the sole purpose of flooding their wardrobes and squeezing in a day-trip to Lake Como or The Alps, yet vacuum-sealed and near bursting with heavenly experiences from the spa on the lower level, the terrace and events hall on the 8th floor to three spacious, techno-savvy conference rooms which gather up to 170 people.

The rooms

Clean white and luxurious grey hues wash the 154 Classic and Junior Suites spread across seven floors to cradle guests in warmth and sophistication, but if you really want to experience ‘extraordinary’, book the Boscolina Suite on the terrace level for a breathtaking view of the Duomo, or even better, splurge on a night or two in the Presidential Suite on the 9th floor for a head-spinning 360-degree panoramic view of the city.

A gastronomical feast

The Boscolo Group understands the importance of great cuisine, and to guarantee that you won’t have to venture beyond their walls for fine food, they’ve got three excellent kitchens catering the best of traditional Italian dishes and a typically Mediterranean menu. Experience the Oltremare Restaurant on the ground floor which doubles up as the breakfast room, while lunch and dinner is served at the Bellavista Restaurant on the terrace. For drinks and light snacks, head down to the bar at any time.

The Terrace – On top of the world…

Decked out with white furniture and grass-like carpets, this level of the hotel is truly special. The Duomo seems to be at arm’s length – the perfect backdrop for special events, including wine tastings and live performances by famous singers. Carol explained that the terrace and nearby events hall are often booked by their local and foreign clientele from Russia as well as the Far and Middle East who choose the Boscolo as a weekend escape where they host bachelorette and birthday parties and even promise “I do” followed by a gala dinner.

The Spa – Relax on cloud nine…

The 600m² luxurious spa and wellness centre is a little piece of heaven tucked away from the bustling streets and lounge upstairs. Hidden behind frosted glass is the most fascinating pool area that I had ever seen. Previously a bank vault, the mass of crisp blue water is cupped in a rocky cave-like room, while the walls erupt with foiled bubbles. Open from 8am until midnight, steal some time to swim until your fingertips wrinkle, steam up in the sauna or lie down and de-stress to the soothing sound of music, a 15m screen and a water feature which all add to the multisensory experience.

The wellness centre is open from 10am until 9pm every day so enjoy an invigorating Turkish bath or book a treatment in the privacy of any of their six beauty rooms. Get your gown and slippers on, sip herbal tea, eat nuts and fresh fruit, and then be whisked away by a therapist for a pampering full-body massage or beautifying session.

Treatments offered:

Facials to promote anti-ageing, firming, lightening and balancing – using Dr Nicholas Perricone products

Massages to aid relaxation, drainage and deep-tissue repair

Beauty enhancements including eyebrow design, evening make-up, manicures and hair removal

Are you a jet-set gent? Then let the Larusmiani Spring/Summer 2015 collection be an extension of your get-up-and-go personality.

Inspired by the Miani family’s stylish albums of 50′s Hollywood glamour and living La Dolce Vita in The Eternal City, the casual elegance of this collection will complement your high-rolling lifestyle while you bounce from one international city to the next, enrobed in utter luxury.

Modernised with leaner cuts, the jackets are paired with pleat-less, slightly more tapered trousers and immaculately crafted footwear to achieve a top-to-toe casual, yet elegant look.

Every ultra-light piece deserves to be packed. They promise warmth without the discomfort of bulk but surprises the wearer with complete versatility to play with colours and shapes, and even enjoy effortless transition from day to night due to meticulous detailing; leather and crocodile as well as suede and silk which join forces in perfect masculine harmony.

If you mainly associate Leonardo Da Vinci to his world-famous artworks, The Mona Lisa and The last Supper, flying machines and anatomical studies, then here’s one more engineered marvel to appreciate; Milan’s Navigli District.

Walk the length of the Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese, take photos from bridges and hop on a relaxing mini-cruise to truly explore and understand the waterways.

What’s the Navigli?

The Navigli District centres around water canals designed and engineered by Leonardo Da Vinci. It consisted of five canals: Naviglio Grande – the main canal currently lined by the bustling streets, Alzaia Naviglio Grande and Ripa Di Porta Ticinese; Naviglio Pavese which extends to the town of Pavia, Naviglio Martesana, Naviglio di Paderno and Naviglio di Bereguardo, however around 1960, the canals had degraded so badly that commercial carrying came to a halt and the canals were mainly used for irrigation. Recently, only the Grand Canal and Naviglio Pavese were restored for navigation.

View map >>

What’s the Navigli like now?

This area of Milan has become a popular hangout drawing young and old alike with eccentric cafes, bars and quaint restaurants which intermingle with churches, clothing boutiques, gelaterie and painters’ small galleries. Join the locals here for the Sunday market when countless stalls lend additional charm. You’ll find everything from antique furniture, leather goods, vintage clothing and bags to model cars, toys and jewellery.

During the winter months, the canals may be drained leaving behind litter and debris which is then cleaned out in preparation for the summer time when the water from Lake Maggiore, which feeds into the Ticino River , will fill it up once more.

Why and how did Leonardo Da Vinci engineer the Navigli?

During the mid 1400′s, Leonardo Da Vinci was tasked by the Duke, Ludovico Sforza, with furthering the design of the Navigli - derived from ‘Navigum’ meaning ”fleet” in Latin – because the waterways were needed to transport heavy marble from Lake Maggiore to the centre of Milan for the construction of the majestic Duomo. He also invented a lock system which allowed one person to change water levels for easier navigation of boats over changes in height, by simply lifting a valve.

Why do a cruise through the canals?

The newest offer from CitySightseeing Milano, the “Navigli di Leonardo Canal Cruise” lets you make sense of the Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese with a 55 minute trip – not from the sidewalk, but from on-board an eco-friendly hybrid boat.

Pre-recorded audio guides provide complete explanations in English and Italian as the boat passes Milan’s typical “case di ringhiera” - small flats with shared balconies which sprouted during the industrial developments of the early 1900′s.

The skipper will warn you to keep your arms within the boats perimeters while the vessel makes a U-turn towards the Navigilio Pavese. Ducklings will inspire a collective ”awwww…” before reaching the pound lock where the water level is controlled. The boat will then back-track to the departure point.

Capture the essence of Milano with this 2-day itinerary. It lists must-see places and must-do activities to prove that beyond the ‘fashion capital’ reputation, this compact city has so much more to offer.

First things first. Gear up with comfy designer shoes and shades to blend in with the stylish crowd. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen and carry an umbrella to shield against UV rays or inevitable raindrops. To share your experience, log onto a public WiFi network or connect your devices on Vodafone, Tre, Wind or TIM. Their stores are sprinkled around the centre including Piazza Duomo and San Babila, but you will need your passport to buy a SIM card.

Day 1

Morning

Get your bearings

The sight-seeing bus (+/- 4 hours)

             Cairoli (M1) or Lanza (M2)

Operated by Zani Viaggi, the red sight-seeing bus departs from Piazza Cairoli on Foro Bonaparte. Buy a 48-hour ticket to hop on and off the double-decker at your convenience, plus take advantage of the extended time and bus stops for the duration of your stay.

There are three carefully plotted routes which will transport you to predetermined attractions. Line A goes to the Navigli, Line B passes the Porta Nuova skyscrapers while line C is an obvious choice for football fans who want to set foot inside San Siro Stadium to see life-size models of Milanese soccer heroes. Historical facts and mind-blowing figures will educate you in pre-recorded global languages, so collect your earphones when you board, sit back and relax. As you pass through Conciliazione, consider getting a glimpse of one of Leonardo Da Vinci’s most studied paintings; The Last Supper, housed in the Santa Maria Della Grazie church.

           L’Arco Delle Pace - Tram 1 or 19

This is a more personalised experience but you have to book in advance. The Segway tour starts at Piazza Sempione where you’ll get basic training on how to control the machine before scooting off through the park to the Sforzesco Castle and onwards to the majestic Duomo. A tour guide will accompany you to assist with maneuvering through tough areas while stopping to explain the significance of important sites. You can ask tons of questions, plus if you’ve got a paraplegic friend, they won’t have to miss out on the fun thanks to the wheelchair-resembling Genny.

The Duomo (+/- 1.5 hours)

             Duomo (M1)

The fifth largest church in the world, it took six centuries to build the gothic architectural wonder with its story-telling carvings. Dress modestly to enter, and after you’ve lit a candle, make your way outside to the ticket booth on the side. To reach the Duomo rooftop, brave the narrow staircase which crams two-way traffic or take the elevator. I counted 239 steps but the fashion capital’s beautiful skyline, the golden Madonnina and intricate sculptures make aching legs worth it.

            Lanza (M2) or Montenapoleone (M3)

This picturesque part of Milan thrills the senses with its cobbled pedestrian pathways and romantic atmosphere. Indulge in a cone of natural gelato from Amorino Gelateria while browsing the eccentric jewels from Angela Caputi Giuggiu and Rosso Prezioso, leather at Giosa Milano as well as unusual clothing and pet accessories found in some of the quaint boutiques. Broaden your mind at The Astronomical Museum or visit the Pinacoteca Di Brera, one of Milan’s most important art galleries. If you’ve had your fill of Italian cuisine by midday, then try Restaurant Lyr in Piazza San Marco where Lebanese dishes await.

            Cairoli (M1) or Cadorna (M2)

With 386,000 m² of lush greenery, this haven to precious flora and fauna species is Milan’s largest park which gives residents an escape from the concrete jungle. Unwind on a park bench with a good book, go for a jog if you have the energy or simply seek refuge in the shade. Live weekend concerts, marathons and other entertainment often break the tranquility but during the week, the park crawls with tourists visiting attractions within its border.

Visit the Sforzesco Castle built during the 15th century. It houses several museums showcasing musical instruments, armory, tapestry, prehistoric collections, applied art as well as antique furniture and wooden sculptures. Renaissance masterpieces include Michelangelo’s last sculpture, the Rondanini Pietà as well as the ‘vineyard’ ceiling inside sala delle asse which was painted by Leonardo da Vinci.

Venture off on a walk trail to discover the Triennale Di Milano art and design expo on the edge of the park. Wondering what the tall white tower is? That’s Torre Branca, the sixth highest structure in Milan. On a clear day, head up for panoramic bird-eye views of the city which extend as far as the Alps, or party the night away in the open-air Cavalli Club at its base.

Only after I had checked in, did I realise that I stood out from the rest of the valued guests staying at the Westin Palace Hotel. Most of them were businessmen with briefcases in-hand huddled in small groups calculating their next moves or involved in serious telephone conversations to seal big deals. It didn’t take me long to conclude that this establishment in Piazza Della Repubblica is preferred by mighty successful corporate climbers who appreciate its convenient location and facilities.

Maria Vittoria Lucchese, a marketing coordinator for the Starwood Hotels and Resorts Group confirmed my theory explaining that the Westin Palace lies just outside of the mainstream tourist track but still offers quick access to the main shopping district and city centre only minutes away as well as Centrale Station which is within walking distance. While we sipped on caffe latte at the lounge bar, she pointed out that the open lobby is purposely decked out with coffee tables and comfy armchairs to cater to their fast-paced clients’ needs for on-the-go get-togethers and work areas. For more privacy, nicotine-dependent guests can conduct business behind the closed doors of the smoking lounge.

The hotel’s regal name is certainly matched by its impressive interior. A trait which the modern-day building must have inherited from pre-World War years when it was simply referred to as The Palace. I was completely enchanted by the domed and vaulted ceilings embossed with floral detail and highlighted with rich gold accents while crystal chandeliers shine warm light to envelope the room in an almost intoxicating, romantic atmosphere.

The Palace was renovated in 1950 and renamed just over ten years ago to reflect its new position under the Westin umbrella. This means that travellers who frequent Starwood Group establishments internationally can have their loyalty rewarded with membership to the SPG (Starwood Preferred Guests) Programme. Every night spent with them banks points which can eventually be redeemed for great perks including free accommodation, free WiFi access and breakfast on-the-house, as well as room upgrades.

The rooms

The exquisite décor of the ground floor extends all the way up. The typical ‘Classic’ rooms are either furnished in the older Imperial style or the newer Milan style achieved by interior architect, Irene Pansadoro, whose feminine creativity infused “Giallo Milano” into the revamp. A cleverly used element, yellow is synonymous with the city because of the old trams which transport its citizens as well as risotto, Milan’s famous rice dish.

‘Deluxe’ rooms, decorated in a classical ‘Aga Khan’ style, are followed by a larger Executive Suite, a Junior Suite and a Diplomatic Suite, but it’s the Presidential Suite stretched between the two top floors which is the hotels crowning glory. It boasts a private terrace, wine bar and splash pool on the lower level and a super-spacious bedroom above.

The facilities

After a long day’s work, rest and relaxation are an absolute necessity. The two Westin Workout Rooms combine gym and spa facilities to rescue tired bodies and help stressed guests blow off steam. Personal trainers can optimise your workout session while therapists use Comfort Zone products to restore vitality.

My favourite escape was the L-shaped rooftop terrace solarium which allows guests to spread out across cane furniture, bask under the sun and host private events. The view from up here is breath-taking and even the Duomo can be seen in the distance.

Hungry? Dining out at the Westin Palace’s Casanova Restaurant is quite an affair. Get dressed in your best formal attire to savour delicious Mediterranean cuisine with a healthy use of organic produce. During the summer months, the entire restaurant relocates to the Ivory Terrace on the mezzanine level.

Having thoroughly enjoyed my stay, it’s no wonder why businessmen choose to spend their fleeting trips here. The hotel seems to be centred on satisfying their clients’ every whim giving them exactly what they need and more of what they desire.

1. What is Expo 2015 all about? This is the Universal Exposition which takes place every five years, each time in a different country. Expo 2015 will take place in Milan from 1 May to 31 October, and Dubai will host it in 2020. Expo 2015 is themed “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” with a focus on sustainability and innovation. All 140 participating countries will showcase their unique cultural and culinary traditions, within self-built lots, to the 20 million expected visitors from around the globe.

2. Where exactly will the expo take place? Expo 2015 will take place in the north west of the city near Rho Fiera, Milan’s fair grounds. It’s easy to reach the dedicated area using the Metro red line (M1).

3. What will the exhibition set-up be like? Inspired by a Roman city in ancient times, the city has allocated over 60 pavilions in this ‘village’ to participating countries which will line either side of the long central division. Italy’s exhibition area intersects to form a global meeting place called Piazza Italia. The space has also provisioned for event areas like the open-air theatre, Lake Arena and children’s park, as well as clusters for other official industry participants.

4. What can I expect to see? The Expo 2015 theme will be reinforced through edutainment for the entire family. Economic, scientific and social issues with regards to food production and consumption will be addressed with complete itineraries of special shows and concerts while each country educates visitors to their stand using interactive, multi-media and multi-sensory initiatives. The individual clusters will each be specifically focused on spices, cereals, coffee, rice, cocoa, islands, arid zones or fresh fruit. At the same time, the Triennale Di Milano near Parco Sempione will offer visitors a different slice of Milan’s artistic culture.

5. What are the exhibition times? The expo will be open every day of the week including weekends.

Mondays & Tuesdays – 9am until 7pm

Wednesday to Sunday – 9am until late

6. What types of tickets are available? You can buy a normal adult ticket as well as special discounted tickets for families, students and pensioners, possibly from July 2014 onwards. Family tickets are available in these combinations:

1 adult + 1 child

2 adults + 1 child

For more kids, simply buy another child ticket

7. What time period is each ticket valid for? You can buy a fixed date or open-date ticket. One ticket is valid for one day’s access to the Expo 2015 site. Open-day tickets do not have a ‘use by’ expiry date. Simply use it once at any time during the entire duration of the expo, provided that there is capacity.

If the eyes are the windows to the soul…

An unspoken language of fleeting glances conveys so much to passers-by, but this summer, these designer sunglasses are stylish reasons to maintain an air of mystery, create intrigue and shield your emotions without having to lower your gaze. Invest in a pair with reflective tinted panes proven to protect the delicate retinas from harmful ultraviolet rays, and show the world your best side beautified with decorative metal, leather and jewel detail.

1. A subdued natural palette dominates the Louis Vuitton range of spectacular rimless and thick-framed eyewear, while turquoise and purple are injected into the ‘Charlotte’ and ‘Anemone’. Petal-shaped frames give distinction to the ‘Daisy’ model while the ‘Obsession Cat-eye’ is decorated with the brand’s signature pointed flower pattern making these 100% UV protection pieces instantly recognisable.

Louis Vuitton ‘Amber’- This attractive pair is edged with metal monogram flowers on the arm tips while the ‘LV’ signature is engraved onto the lenses and temples.

2. Easy to identify with a single glance, Prada sunglasses are whimsical accessories with some flaunting the “Baroque curl” at the temple or large, round frames for eccentricity and others, a generous lashing of tortoiseshell surrounding cat-eye lenses. Peep through the bejewelled Prada ‘Ornate’ or the ‘Poeme’ design which boasts oversized square frames.

Prada ‘Ornate’ - This pair is embellished with crystal and black stone on the curled arms and contrasting ivory frame. The round lenses are tinted in dark grey and lake blue.

3. With uncompromising design and quality extending to a myriad of daily items like silk scarves and precious pens, Bulgari has successfully permeated their range of fine eyewear with extraordinary luxury too. Get noticed with big round frames from the Diva Collection, metal scales on ‘Serpenti’ items or multi-coloured sapphires on a ‘Le Gemme’ pair.

Bulgari ‘Diva’- Hand-set crystals lend glamour to this gorgeous accessory while the summery jade frame complements the over-sized round shape for complete sophistication.

4. Make a statement with unconventional Versace eyewear that incorporates interesting detail for undisputed glamour. Let the fun begin with the colourful ‘Rock Medusa’ which features canary yellow arms, or wear the maxi shades in contrasting black and white. Don’t be bound by bright hues when you opt for something stunning that’s trimmed with studs or textured with a marble effect.

Versace ‘Rock Medusa’ - The grey cat-eye lenses of this two-tone pair are framed in black and yellow acetate with cut-out detail on the front and small Medusas at the sides.

5. Enjoy superb protection from harsh UV rays with handcrafted Dior sunglasses. Flaunt the confidence of a silver screen siren with rectangular frames or go for glamour with a butterfly silhouette. Non-conforming architectural lines meet high fashion trends to create their unstructured pantos shape, while the mask contours of the Dior ‘Solar’ range create a dynamic yet subtle contrast with pink, yellow and ivory metal as well as mirrored lenses.

Dior ‘Metaleyes1’ – These sunglasses are characterised by a feminine circular form, a glossy metal wave across the crystal acetate front and subtle contrasting hues.

6. The Cartier maison proudly features their iconic big cat on a number of their exceptionally crafted jewels, and precious eyewear is no exception. The panther is tastefully stretched to become the gold-finished arms of light, rimless sunglasses featuring a wide range of colored lenses to choose from; See the world through rose, calm green or blue tints but if you prefer rimmed glasses to balance defined eyebrows, experiment with Trinity De Cartier. Inspired by their three-banded Trinity design, these frames are comprised of red composite, grey lenses and a golden palladium finish.

Panthére De Cartier – Rimless shades are graced with their leopard mascot, gold or platinum-finished temples and oval, brown lenses that gleam with a golden mirror reflection.

7. Unleash your fabulous feline self and maintain an air of mystery with dramatic Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses in leopard spots and blooming florals. DG-branded black frames hint at mosaic on the inner edges of the arms, and for the truly bold-at-heart fashionista, get behind a 70’s inspired pair moulded from pearled acetate in purple, red or petrol blue with exposed silver temples.

Dolce & Gabbana – The butterfly profile of this wild pair with its animalier print holds polarised brown gradient lenses which offer proven UV protection.

8. Amidst the Chopard luxury watches, high jewellery and engagement rings, this French brand showcases exquisite eyewear like the dark ‘Havana’ frames with gleaming rose-gold details and a touch of bling to lift the graduated brown lenses. Wrap your pretty peepers in oversized Bordeaux frames polished with 23-carat gold or get chic sunglasses that appear to be carved out of semi-precious rock.

Chopard Havana - Gradual smoky lenses are set in shiny grey, stone-effect frames with sparkling palladium for a rich, impressive look.

Playground of the rich and famous, Lago di Como is only 50km north of the fashion capital.

Not just a pretty glacial lake, the mass of glistening water close to the Swiss border is surrounded by serene greenery and the most gorgeous little towns dotted along the edge. Grab your camera, hop on a train at Cadorna Station and get ready to snap away because every street corner and villa deserves to be imprinted in your memory and in your holiday album.

1. Piazza Duomo

Leave the Como train station and head straight here for a delicious seafood dish or pizza at lunchtime. You’ll need the energy for a full day ahead and besides, the beautiful cathedral offers a breath-taking backdrop. Once your belly is satisfied, browse the multi-brand Coin shop, peep into the Swarovski store and check out the high-end boutiques that lead further into the town.

2. The duomo in Como

2. The dock at Como

Cross the main street to take in the splendid view of rolling mountains covered in greenery. A short stroll to the left will see you arrive at the ticket office where you can purchase a ferry ticket to circumnavigate the lake. The ticket allows you to hop on and off at five towns including Cernobbio, Torno and Udine.

3. The piazza at Cernobbio

Like a film set, Cernobbio offers a dream-like fountain – the perfect spot to capture on film. Before you soak up the sun and enjoy the musical trickle here, take some time to watch the passing boats and water-sportsman from a park bench under the grove of evergreen trees. During the fall, the leaves are painted in spectacular golden tones – an equally magical reason to return when temperatures plummet.

4. The grove of trees at Cernobbio’s edge

5. Cernobbio’s cobbled walkways

When you’re done posing around the centre fountain, cool down with delicious gelato while exploring the maze of quiet cobbled streets. Like an unspoiled jewel, the buildings are antique with tourists and locals alike making random appearances.

6. The water’s edge at Torno

The last stop before returning to Como town, Torno’s welcoming port is even more isolated than Cernobbio with the only signs of life peeping out of a tiny café. The dividing wall is the ideal place to perch yourself while you straddle the best of both worlds with the cathedral tower above your head and sound of water crashing at your back.

7. The boats at Torno

8. The view from Torno

8. A bird-eye view from the mountain top

Return to Como town and walk all the way down the main street to the opposite side of the lake. By now, you would have noticed the man-made worm that crawls up the mountain. This ‘funicolare’ begins its journey from here and if you’re lucky to get up on a cloudless day, get ready to be bowled over by a spectacular view of the town and lake below while sipping a cappuccino at the hotel.
